New CEDAW Recommendation on Rural Women

The UN CEDAW Committee recently announced a new general recommendation on rural women. As the majority of Cambodians live in rural areas or have migrated to the cities from rural areas, these new guidelines are particularly relevant in Cambodia.  GR-34 is currently available in English.

The Committee notes that CEDAW Article 14 is the only provision in an international human rights treaty which specifically pertains to rural women. But all of the treaty applies to rural women.  The new GR explores the links between Article 14 and the rest of CEDAW. Many of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) address the situation of rural women and and the Committee states that it is using this opportunity to guide States parties on the implementation of their obligations with respect to rural women.
