News: Protesters call for villagers to be released

A group of land-rights activists demonstrate in front of the US embassy in Phnom Penh yesterday. About 100 protesters marched to the embassy to continue their calls for Boeung

Kak villager Yorm Bopha and Tim Sakmony, of Borei Keila, to be released from Prey Sar prison. A group of protesters, some carrying Cambodian and US flags, were initially blocked near the Boeung Kak lake area by about 50 police officers, but

eventually made it to the embassy, where they presented staff with a petition urging them to intervene. Bopha was arrested on September 4 and charged with causing intentional violence Sakmony was arrested the next day, accused of making a false declaration. Their supporters say they were targeted by authorities for protesting against land evictions.
