A 19-MONTH-OLD baby who was brutally attacked last month by an alleged burglar in Phnom Penh died yesterday, a Dutch official and hospital staff have confirmed.

Dutch national Dana Beerdsen had been in critical condition since being found on April 28 alongside the body of her mother, UN worker Daphna Beerdsen, who had been stabbed to death in their home in the capital’s Chamkarmon district.

“I can confirm” that Dana Beerdsen died yesterday, an employee at the Netherlands embassy in Bangkok told the Post this afternoon.

Dana had been brought to Bangkok General Hospital, where she underwent multiple surgeries to reduce swelling to her brain.

Hospital staff confirmed the child died there yesterday, but said her family asked them not to release any further details.

“The baby just passed away,” said Monnita Tonprasert, a member of Bangkok General’s office staff. “The family doesn’t want us to give any more details.”

Chea Pin, 35, was charged in Phnom Penh Municipal Court last Saturday with intentional murder with aggravated circumstance. He allegedly tried to steal Daphna Beerdsen’s bicycle, and stabbed her repeatedly with a screwdriver.

The embassy employee, who declined to be named, said they would offer counselling services to family members.
