NGO-CEDAW and CAMBOW Joint Statement for December 10th – Call for Release of 18 Detainees

Phnom Penh, 9 December 2014

NGO-CEDAW and CAMBOW are coalitions of Cambodian NGOs working for the advancement of the rights of women and monitoring the implementation of CEDAW.

In the occasion of International Human Rights Day, December 10th, we call for the Cambodian government to fulfill its commitments according to Articles 38 and 39 of the Constitution, Article 14 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, signed by Cambodia in 1992.

We also expect the implementation of the Article 10 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ensuring that Cambodian citizens have the right to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal.

We condemn the arrest, detention and conviction of community representatives following protests in Phnom Penh.

The 18 persons currently detained are: Mr. Sum Puthy, Mr. Ouk Pich Samnang, Ms. Nget Khun, Ms. Tep Vanny, Ms. Song Srey Leap, Ms. Kong Chantha, Ms. Phan Chhunreth, Ms. Po Chorvy, Ms. Nong Sreng, Mr. Meach Sovannara, Ms. Heng Pich, Ms. Im Srey Touch, Ms. Phoung Sopheap, Venerable Khith Vannak, Venerable Sang Kosal, Mr. Tep Narin, Ms. Ly Seav Minh and Venerable Seung Hai.

We urge for the immediate and unconditional release of the 18 persons still detained at CC1 and CC2 prison. We especially insist the government should implement the Cambodian Constitution and the international Human Rights treaties it ratified.
